Let's Fix That Gap in Your Smile
Thinking about closing a gap in your teeth? You have several options! This month, we’re talking about three effective options to consider when you want to fix that gap in your smile.

Ready to fix that gap in your smile? You’re not alone! It’s a common dental request.

A small gap between your teeth might not seem like a big deal until you notice it in every photo. Even small gaps can make you feel self-conscious when you smile. Larger gaps can also create practical issues, like food getting trapped or crunchy foods irritating your gums.

The good news? You don’t have to live with those gaps. Cosmetic dentistry here at Dental Center of Hercules offers more than one way to close those gaps, and the right option depends on your goals, timeline, and overall dental health.

Below, Dr. Lovely Manlapaz Teodoro explains why gaps happen and how bonding, veneers, and Invisalign® can help you close them.

Why do gaps happen?

Tooth gaps (also called diastemas) can develop for several reasons.

You may have:

  • Naturally spaced teeth
  • A mismatch between tooth size and jaw size
  • Teeth that have shifted out of place due to a missing tooth

Understanding the cause helps Dr. Teodoro determine the best way to fix it.

Option 1: Dental bonding

The gap between your front teeth (officially called a maxillary midline diastema) is typically defined as a space larger than 0.5 millimeters. Smaller gaps, especially those around 1 to 1.5 millimeters, can often be closed with direct restorations like composite resin.

Dr. Teodoro carefully applies a tooth-colored composite resin to the sides of your teeth, then shapes and sculpts it to close the gap. The material is hardened with a special light and polished to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.

Dental bonding can usually be completed in just one visit, which makes it one of the quickest ways to improve the appearance of a small gap.

Option 2: Veneers

If you’re looking for a fuller transformation and have only a mild gap, veneers may be the right fit.

Veneers are thin, custom-made porcelain shells. They’re placed over the front of your teeth. They can close gaps instantly while also improving the shape, size, and color of your teeth.

Veneers are often ideal if you:

  • Want immediate results
  • Have additional cosmetic concerns (like discoloration or uneven edges)
  • Prefer a more dramatic smile enhancement

Veneers take two appointments. During your first appointment, Dr. Teodoro preps your teeth for your veneers, takes impressions, and provides you with temporary veneers. Once your veneers are ready, you come back to our office so Dr. Teodoro can place your permanent veneers.

Option 3: Invisalign® clear aligners

If you’d rather move your teeth into better alignment, you might consider Invisalign clear aligners. Invisalign uses a system of clear aligners to gradually shift your teeth into position over several months.

This approach is often best if you:

  • Want to correct spacing without altering your natural tooth structure
  • Have bite issues, such as overbite or underbite
  • Have other orthodontic issues, including crowding
  • Prefer a subtle, nearly invisible treatment
  • Are open to a longer treatment timeline

Invisalign is the longest treatment out of these three options (an average of 18 months), but it can do more. It doesn’t “hide” a gap; it can move your teeth and address several orthodontic issues at once.

How to choose the right option

While you have several options to fix your gap, you don’t have to sort through them all on your own.

At The Dental Center of Hercules, Dr. Teodoro helps you make the right decision to fix your gap. She first evaluates your smile, examines your bite, discusses your options, and helps you choose a plan that fits your vision.

Some people want fast, cosmetic results. Others prefer a more natural alignment approach. The right choice depends on your preferences, dental health, and long-term goals.
